The properties are shown at the bottom of the explorer page, but after I type a new value in a field, like Title, when I select save, I get an error message:
Error 0x800700C1: MyFileName is not a valid Win32 application.
I am running 64 bit Windows 7 and the file is a pdf.

More thinking. There are only 3 layers in play 1) explorer.exe 2) my code 3) the operating system.

We have verified that my code is the correct 64-bit version correctly registered, so we wonder if there is 32-bit software elsewhere. We can check what my code depends on using a dependency walker. The standard Microsoft one can be most easily downloaded from http://dependencywalker.com/, Use the Download Version 2.2.6000 for x64 [468k] link. (To verify the MS connection, see http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vcgeneral/thread/3c41c06b-d7c6-483e-8705-4109d5eb8ec6 )

Once you have the download, unzip and run the exe. Use it to open C:\Program Files\File Metadata\FileMetaPropertyHandler.dll. You should see something like the attached image (dependencies.jpg). There should be no errors in the bottom pane, and all the modules in the second pane up should be x64.
